Pendleton County, Where the store at the Rocks has been trading in the same building since 1902.Where the courthouse is the fourth one, because the third burned along with most of Main Street.Where the first frost is a subject, not a forecast.Where the grocery still traces back to the Franklin IGA Foodliner of 1970.Bowers Garage, who will be at the accident just before the fire department.Where maple syrup runs faster than the handyman, and more reliably too.Where there is a cidery, a distillery, and a trail that joins them up.Where you can hear a chainsaw three ridges away on a still morning.Where some of the phone numbers start 540, because Virginia is that close.Where the county was made in 1788 out of pieces of three others.Where the deer are a hazard, a full freezer, and a conversation.Where you might not know your next-door neighbour, but you are related to them.
