Pendleton County, Spruce Knob, perhaps the closest some of us will get to Heaven.Where the hardware store, the bank and the courthouse are all on the same street.Where a bank chartered in 1852 keeps a branch on Main Street.Where one pastor serves three Methodist congregations and gets to all of them.Where directions are given by who used to live there.Where a filling station has a bakery, and the pepperoni rolls are the reason you stopped.Where ramps season is a season, the same as spring is.Where the mail comes to a box at the end of a lane, and that is the address.Where the guides have been taking people up Seneca Rocks for thirty-six years.Where the gym is open at three in the morning, if three in the morning is when you are up.Where the Forest Service campground looks straight across at the Rocks.Where the bank most people use opened in Franklin in 1925.
