Pendleton County, Where the ground rises and falls further than in any other county in the state.Where the trout farm will oblige if the creek will not.Bowers Garage, who will be at the accident just before the fire department.Where the teenagers have no concept of a toll road.Where nobody is quite certain what a baker's dozen is, and nobody has needed to be.Where ramps season is a season, the same as spring is.Where the fog sits in the valley until nine, and then it does not.Where dark still means dark, and the stars are why people stop the car.Where Fort Seybert is a place, a date, and a thing people still bring up.Where there is no hospital, and everyone knows exactly how long it takes to get to Petersburg.Where the courthouse is the fourth one, because the third burned along with most of Main Street.Where you might not know your next-door neighbour, but you are related to them.
