Pendleton County, Where you can hear a chainsaw three ridges away on a still morning.Where somebody’s cattle will be in the road, and it will be fine.Where the county clinic will see you the same day if you are sick.Where somebody will stop, and they will not be in a hurry about it.Where the library shuts on Sunday and Monday, and nobody minds.Where the fire department is volunteers who left their own supper to come.Where 696 square miles are shared between about six thousand people.Where the climbing school has been teaching on the same rock since 1971.Where the garden goes in when the ground says so, not when the calendar does.Where an hour to a supermarket is not a complaint, just a fact.Where the schools are the Wildcats and the Braves, and that covers all of them.Where the Forest Service campground looks straight across at the Rocks.
